Grant From NU, Labor From Members,
Provides Trust With Seven Interpretive Kiosks
10/15/2009
A generous grant from Northeast
Utilities has underwritten the cost of
materials for seven interpretive kiosks
at Trust properties.
All of the labor for construction was
donated by Terry Wakeman, Tom
Treiber, and Gary Griffin. The kiosks
have been installed at Utley Hill, Wolf
Rock, Byles Sanctuary, Coney Rock,
Pigeon Swamp, Knowlton Hill and-
Bradley-Buchanan Woods.
On another front, the tireless (but
never tiresome) Griffin and side-kick
Scott Matthies spent more than two
days torching invasive barberry bushes
at the Preston Preserve. Anti-invasive
work also continues at Pigeon Swamp,
Byles Sanctuary, and Broadway
Meadow.
It took more than 10 hours for removal
of material dumped in the Windham
Bog along the Gates property in
Windham. Disposal was provided by
Gates/Bellavance.
Wakeman distinguished himself by
winching large items from the water, at
one point sinking chest deep before rigging
up boards and a ladder to get to an old car hood long used for target practice. Additional loot
included 20-plus tires and a half dumpster full of metal.
The Trust would also like to give a big thanks to retiring
steward Bill O'Keefe who for many years gave great care
to the Byles Sanctuary in Ashford.
